BACKGROUND

When I first heard that 2023 was the 10 year anniversary of the publication, I was so delighted to be a small part of the journey of DAMchic. The first thing that came to my head was the idea of tying in old issues in some way. The editors and I had come up with the idea of having print contributors do shoots and articles based on the themes of old DAMchic issues, and thus the magazine was born. 

OBJECTIVE

For me, my ultimate goal was educating the reader on the history of DAMchic and having a consistent basis for it throughout the issue. My art direction mostly lied in the templating and concepting of making the issue consistent using different elements and nods to the old design of each issue that was featured. My challenge was how to incorporate a brand into the issue that all the designers involved would understand and at the end of the day would feel like one designer had made the issue.

For an anniversary issue of this caliber, each of the editors has a different take on what should be the cover for the issue. Some suggested remaking an old cover, some suggested a collage of covers, but in the end we ended up with this cover, this was the first time a cover for DAMchic feature no prominent model, the editors wanted it to be less about the models themselves and more of a focus on the celebration of 10 years. This cover, is actually a few different pictures photoshopped together to get the effect of the arms ripping through a photo backdrop.

With all the stories taking inspiration from a past issue, one of the key elements I wanted to include on all the pages was a nod to the old covers of DAMchic. Not only did this serve as a nod to the old issues, but it also was a visual indicator for readers that they've begun a new story.

this is one of my favorite pieces that i've ever written.

FASHION IS FOR EVERYONE

Not only was this the last DAMchic magazine I got to work on, but it was the first ever time I contributed as a writer. Through exhaustive interviews with former editor-in-chiefs and professional staff, I wrote the feature story of the issue talking about the history of DAMchic and how it's changed over the last ten years.

LAUNCH PARTY

For this magazine, I wanted to do something super different for the launch marketing revolving around the designs of the posters. Instead of using pictures from the magazine like we typically do, I made this futuristic logo of DAMchic, with some 3D rendering. To enhance the marketing from multiple places, I made "I'm Getting Published" Instagram Story graphics that we sent to all the directors, models, photographers, etc.. to be posted. This gave us more marketing power in terms of reaching more people, and it further broadened the range of who and how DAMchic is made.
