OBJECTIVE
After college, this project served as the first return to print magazines, but this time I had more of a crucial role other than my previous layout gigs. This time, I was responsible for the ideation, conception, production and finalization of all visuals for an entire magazine. The Chronicle approached me with a theme inspired by philanthropy trend predictions for 2025. A lot of the stories were hard to conceptualize and had similar themes, so my main objective was to provide a solid visual theme and voice that could stay consistent throughout the whole magazine, while keeping each story's graphics independent and able to stand-alone.
INSPIRATION
BRINGING STORIES TO LIFE: FROM COPY TO IMAGERY
Like all my client work in the past, I try to start every project with a simple card deck full of inspo I've seen across the internet or in physical media. I try to take in as much of the ideas pitched for stories and formulate 3-4 ideas per story. With that I can navigate the vast visual landscape and land on specifics for what I feel would work. In this case, monochrome + cutouts + bright colors was calling out to me.

The previous magazine at the Chronicle featured lots of warm colors, so we went with a very cool color palette. Blues and greens from all over the color spectrum contributed in making the voice of this magazine shine.

out of all the stories, this one was the one I had the best sense of what I wanted to do, kinda the showstopper in my eyes
a little bit of grain never hurt anyone...

this was the third iteration of this design, originally set to be multicolor and bright yellow, this muted tan-ish color set the mood of a "toolset" the best

it's giving yin + yang, kinda?
this stock image perfectly encapsulates my ideal design set up, laptop + dog + couch

COVER
HOW TO GET EVERY STORY ON ONE COVER
When it came time to make a cover for the issue, I had a few thoughts on the idea of "trends" Maybe, make a calendar or show a clock. But in the end the editors decided they wanted to spotlight every story in some way on the cover. My solution to this was taking individual elements from each of the visuals I made and sparse them out on a grid formation with overlaps and monochrome coloring. This sets the mood and vibe of the issue before you even open it up.
